Professional Development Division

Since 1972, The Children's Center at Caltech (CCC) has been offering high quality child care and education for children ages six month to six years. In 2000, our research lead us to adopt STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) curricula as a focus of our early childhood program. As leaders in STEM Early Childhood education, we launched ECSTEM in 2011, and host an annual conference bringing together educators, policy makers, researchers and other vested community stakeholders to address the needs of our youngest citizens.

Due to the overwhelming demand for tours of our facilities, and requests for professional growth workshops, we have formed a Professional Development Division (PDD) that arranges tours, on-site visits and workshops at the CCC.

No Windows, No Doors

Join us as we discuss how to make science, technology, engineering, and mathematics available to young children through an outdoor STEM laboratoy.  Hear the history of our STEM lab, how we created an inviting learning environment, and how we implement activities for children to explore.  Be inspired by our journey to create your own STEM laboratory.

From Infants to Toddlers

Children are naturally curious learners!  Through observation, exploration, and discovery, infants and toddlers make connections to the world around them.  In this workshop, you will gain ideas for STEM environments, curriculum, activities, and the transition from infant to toddler.

Diversity in the Classroom

In this workshop we explore activities and curriculum development that reflect all elements of diversity as outlined by ECSERS and NAEYC accreditation criteria.  We will review the children's understandng of diverse issues and racial awareness.  Participants will be able to develop appropriate activites to support children's understanding of diverse issues.  Through hand on activites we explore materials and environmental factors related to diversity.  Particpants are provided with a list of diverse children's books.
